The Literacy Project is your way to the future of your community.
More than 55 million girls globally have no access to education, and 74% of the world’s illiterate population are women. Literacy is essential to enhance quality of life and to enable a person to function easily within society. In Papua New Guinea, due to the dominant masculine culture, women tend to have a low status and limited access to education. For women in the poor settlement areas around urban towns and rural areas, this situation makes them and their children particularly vulnerable. Women who cannot read and write are unable to give the correct change when selling their produce or the right medication to their children or the family.
The population of PNG is currently 6 million, out of which over 2 million people are literate. The adult male population over 20 years of age who are literate or able to read and write are 61.2% and the adult female literate population account for 51%. The figures show that the numbers have not improved since the last head count of persons in PNG.
The Literacy Project consists of the following stages:-
- Awareness and Induction for 5 days, is held in your village with the YWCA Literacy Team.
- Teacher training for 15 days, is held at the YWCA Literacy Center in your province. This consists of methodologies including post-literacy programs and quality of life improvement programs followed by materials, production and library study.
- Orientations for 2 months, is held in your village supported by your local YWCA Literacy Team.
