  • 1. Contributions of women peacemakers to be documented at two-month residency program
    Application deadline: May 23, 2008

The Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice in San Diego, California is calling for applications for its Women Peacemakers Program. Aimed at capturing the stories and best practices of women who have been spearheading transformative peace initiatives in conflict-affected countries around the world, the program offers four leaders a two-month residency at the institute where they can document their unique contributions through film and narrative.

Opportunities for community engagement will be organized through a series of public panels as well as through meetings with activists and leaders involved in human rights, political action and peacemaking efforts. A small stipend will also be provided to those selected.

The institute is also accepting applications for four Peace Writers who will work with the peacemakers to record and research their stories for publication. Writers will interview the women and undertake extensive research to reflect the histories of each conflict and peacemaking effort.

For more information and an application, visit peace.sandiego.edu or contact Erika Lopez, Women Peace Makers Program Officer, at erika.lopez@sandiego.edu

    2. Examination of feminist perspectives & activism on peace, gender & development AT Women's Human Rights institute to Application deadline: Till all spots are filled

Offered by the Center for Womens Studies in Education of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, from May 30, 2008 to July 8, 2008, this five-week human rights institute brings feminist perspectives and an activist orientation to the issues of peace, human rights and development.

Participants will gain a deeper knowledge of gender and feminist analysis and theory; engage in research/scholarship connected to and informed by practice; understand the causes of injustice and possibilities for change; learn about the UN human rights system and how it works; increase skills in community practice, political lobbying, international networking and organizing; increase their ability to use human rights education as a tool for social change; and develop their own perspectives by examining diverse approaches and current debates.

The institute will unfold in two parts:
  • Women's Human Rights Education in the Age of the Market: Challenges & Visions (May 30-June 20)

  • Women's Human Rights Education: Instruments and Activism (June 23-July 4)

  • Participants can register for the entire five-weeks or for the first part only. The institute is being directed by Alda Facio and the distinguished faculty includes Peggy Antrobus and Angela Miles.
